ASPEN, Colo.—Pitkin County commissioners have approved a 1,000-foot runway extension at the Aspen Airport.
The $18 million to $20 million project has also been cleared by the FAA but won’t happen until a water well in the extension’s path has been moved. If built, the runway will be lengthen from 7,006 feet to 8,006 feet toward the south. Commissioners approved the extension Wednesday.
A county study estimates extending the runway would bring about 11,000 extra visitors and at least $29 million to the area annually.
The airport’s high-elevation runway isn’t long enough for commercial jets to take off with full passenger loads on warmer days when the air density is lower.
