Scott Pinckney of Scottsdale, Ariz., a senior to-be at Arizona State, defeated Oklahoma State’s Kevin Tway of Edmond, Okla., on the second playoff hole to win the 107th Trans-Mississippi Championship on Thursday at Denver Country Club.

Tway shot a 3-under-par 67 in the final round to catch Pinckney at 6-under 204 and force the playoff.

Chip Lutz of Reading, Pa., won the senior division with a final-round 74 and 6-over 216 total, one stroke better than Bob Burton of Everett, Wash., and Jerry Greenbaum of Atlanta.

Robert Polk of Parker and Sean Forey of Morrison tied for fifth at 220.

Longmont’s Coffin claims medalist honors.

Jason Coffin of Longmont started with four straight birdies en route to a 5-under 66 to claim medalist honors in qualifier No. 3 for the HealthONE Colorado Open at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster.

The final three spots were determined after the six players tied at 1-over-par went back out on the course for a sudden-death playoff, which was highlighted by Thom Gonzalez’s holing out from the fairway for eagle on the first playoff hole to earn his spot in the Open.

• Nick Allen of Raccoon Creek G.C. and John Ahern of Bear Creek G.C. each won two matches to advance to today’s finals of the Colorado Golf Association’s Junior Match Play Championship at Bear Creek.

Allen made four birdies on the final eight holes to defeat Cody Kent of Plum Creek Golf & Country Club 4 and 2 in the semifinals, while Ahern overcame Class 5A state high school champion Caleb Barker of Perry Park Country Club 3 and 2.

Safeway Open: Monroe edges Landwerlen.

Top-seeded Nick Monroe, a former University of North Carolina player, advanced through the round of 16 at the Safeway Foundation Men’s Open at Colorado Athletic Club Inverness with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 win over Andrew Landwerlen of Denver.

The second seed, Roman Borvanov of Oregon, advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Denver’s Damon Gillette. Cory Ross, the four-time Denver City Open champ, beat ex-Metro State star Sean Carlton 6-0, 6-2.
