Delta Air Lines expects more than 65,000 applications for 1,000 job openings in its hub and station customer-service and operations areas, the carrier’s chief executive said Friday.

So far, the response has been “overwhelming,” Delta CEO Richard Anderson said in a weekly recorded message to employees.

The Atlanta-based carrier has an unspecified number of ticket and gate-agent jobs open in Denver and Colorado Springs and baggage-handler and ramp-operator positions in Denver.

Delta is hiring workers at its 25 biggest U.S. airports to help with planes flying with near-record percentages of seats filled and to cope with weather disruptions.

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Delta had an 82.5 percent domestic load factor — a measure of how full its planes are — in April.

Statistics also showed Delta carried more passengers in April than any other U.S. airline.

Anderson said the company often gets “many multiples” of applications when it has job openings.

To receive 65,000 for 1,000 openings is “not unusual,” Anderson said. “We usually get literally thousands more applications than we have openings.”

Delta is expanding its workforce as travel demand and fares increase.

A second-quarter net income of $510 million is expected to be reported Monday by Delta based on the average of five analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

Delta has about 81,000 employees and has said it plans to hire about 240 pilots in August.

At Denver International Airport, Delta holds a 4 percent market share. It has six gates on Concourse C.
