Dustin Mills of Arvada tied Jacob Rogers of Tucson for medalist honors at Monday’s fourth round of qualifying for the 2010 HealthONE Colorado Open held at Legacy Ridge Golf Course.
Mills and Rogers shot 7-under-par 64s to tie a course record, with Mills recording six birdies and an eagle. Eleven other players shot under-par to join the two medalists in the championship.
The final qualifying three spots and first alternate spots were determined after the five players tied at 1-under-par par went back out on the course for a hole-by-hole playoff. The final places were determined after the first playoff hole.
Today’s round was the final qualifying for the Colorado Open, which runs Thursday through Sunday at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver .
Clark impresses at Junior Nationals.
Wyndham Clark of Greenwood Village finished with a 4-under 68 to tie for second place at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship on the Classic Course at Egypt Valley Country Club near Grand Rapids, Mich.
Spencer Sheets of Centennial and Jimmy Makloski from Pueblo each shot an 80.
The field of 156 players will be cut to 64 following today’s second round of stroke play. The championship’s 18-hole match-play segment is scheduled to begin Wednesday with first-round matches.
Second and third-round matches are scheduled for Thursday, and the quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Friday. The 36-hole final match is set for Saturday.
Three Bears make all-conference defense.
Northern Colorado football players Korey Askew, John Eddy and Nick Hernon were named to the preseason all-Big Sky defensive team.
Askew, a senior cornerback from Denver, had 74 total tackles last season, with three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
Eddy, a senior linebacker from Greeley, had 80 tackles and led the team with 5 1/2 sacks despite playing in just eight of the Bears’ 11 games. He also had a team- best four forced fumbles.
Hernon, a junior defensive end from Castle Rock, was second on the team with five sacks and had 48 tackles.
Mines hires assistant soccer coach.
Colorado School of Mines has named Kate Cortis assistant women’s soccer coach.
Cortis most recently served as the girls director of coaching for the Stingers Soccer Club in Evergreen and also spent five seasons (2004-08) as the associate head women’s soccer coach at the University of Minnesota.
