A construction worker was trapped for more than four hours on a mechanical lift on Tuesday at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton.

The worker was checking a sprinkler head on the 40-foot tall ceiling when the lift failed to descend about 8:30 a.m., according to a news release.

The Thornton Fire Department was called to the scene at 11:40 a.m. after the lift-rental company was unable to free the worker.

A Thornton firefighter ascended a rescue rope attached to the roof in order to reach the worker.

The two then were safely lowered to the ground at 12:45 p.m. in a harness.

The Adams 12 school district aquatic center is scheduled to open next month.
