DULCE, N.M. — One of two escaped Colorado jail inmates was fatally shot Thursday by authorities in northern New Mexico, and the search continued into the night for the other man.
New Mexico State Police and Jicarilla Apache tribal police said they acted on a tip and found the two escaped inmates around 4 p.m. in an abandoned trailer in a remote area near Dulce.
One of the inmates ran, and the other tried to attack officers and was shot and killed by tribal police, said Peter Olson, New Mexico Department of Public Safety spokesman. He said authorities did not immediately specify which inmate was slain.
Authorities have been searching for Jason Snow and Clifford Reseigh since Tuesday night. That’s when authorities say the two escaped from the Archuleta County Detention Center near Pagosa Springs after assaulting two jail guards and stealing a vehicle.
The vehicle was later found abandoned near the Colorado-New Mexico border.
Archuleta County sheriff’s officials said Snow, 24, was being held pending sentencing for felony convictions of assault, tampering with evidence and leaving the scene of an accident that caused serious bodily injury. Reseigh, 45, was being held on a probation violation.
A multi-agency search was being conducted Thursday night for the remaining escaped inmate.
