FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A Fort Collins police lieutenant has made his first court appearance on charges of perjury in a botched murder conviction.

Lt. James Broderick waived his rights to be formally advised of the charges and to have the grand jury indictment read in court during a hearing Friday.

Broderick is accused of lying during the investigation and trial of Timothy Masters. Masters was convicted of first-degree murder in 1999 for the death of a Fort Collins woman. The conviction was overturned in 2008 by DNA evidence.

Broderick hasn’t entered a plea. The next hearing in his case is Sept. 28.

Fort Collins and Larimer County have settled lawsuits by Masters for a total of $10 million.
