Former Denver Mayor Wellington E. Webb and his wife, former state Rep. Wilma J. Webb, donated $2,500 to the drive to contribute a portrait of President Barack Obama to the state Capitol.
A group called Colorado Citizens for Culture and House Majority leader Paul Weissmann, of Louisville, are working to raise $10,000 to have a Colorado Springs artist paint the portrait. The painting would join a collection of portraits from George Washington to George W. Bush.
An Arizona couple donated the majority of paintings in 1979. State funds and private donations have paid for others.
