SCARLET HOTEL

Tredragon Road, Mawgan Porth, Cornwall,

England TR8 4DQ Phone: 011 44 01637 861800,

Rates: start at $348 for a “Just Right King” or two twins, which includes VAT and breakfast. The majority of the Scarlet’s 37 rooms are “Just Right” rooms. The Scarlet does run specials. Parking is free. However, parking is cramped, and it’s best to let a hotel employee park your car.

Stay here if you: like fantastic views of the Atlantic Ocean, vast beach and access to hiking trails along the coast of Cornwall.

It’s close to: Tintagel Castle, the legendary home of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and numerous quaint, seaside villages.

The rooms are: modern and comfortable with wonderful views of the ocean. Most have a bath and shower, although some have a shower only. There’s a small TV on a desk and two well-padded, round, “pod”-style chairs with a little table. Rooms also feature a small balcony with chairs looking out at the water, or direct access to the gardens.

They put all of the money into: a beautiful, indoor swimming pool and a chemical-free outdoor swimming pool filtered by reeds. There are also two log-fired seaweed baths/hot tubs (pictured above) outside on the edge of the cliff looking out to sea and a spa with a team of holistic therapists.

The bottom line: The Scarlet is considered to be the best new hotel in Great Britain. The rooms are excellent, and the food served in its restaurant and bar is superior. Text and photo by Howard Pankratz
