THE COMPANY: St. Louis-based Arch Coal Inc., one of the world’s biggest coal producers, fuels about 8 percent of all U.S. electrical generation.
THE EARNINGS: Arch says it had net income of $66.2 million, or 41 cents per share, during the April-through-June period versus a loss of $15.1 million, or 11 cents per share, a year ago.
THE OUTLOOK: Arch, citing improving coal markets, says it expects an even stronger showing in 2010’s second half and raised the lower end of its earnings outlook for the year by a dime.
