This is a fine example of how high-proof spirits can make a cocktail better. A 100-plus-proof rye such as Wild Turkey or Rittenhouse, plus the 110-proof green Chartreuse, add a high-octane twist to a classic Manhattan.

If it’s too intense for your taste, use yellow Chartreuse instead (which the original calls for). If you don’t have Punt e Mes (a bitter Italian vermouth), substitute a 2:1 mix of sweet vermouth and Campari. Adapted from a recipe by Michael McIlroy, bartender at Milk & Honey in New York.

Ingredients

      Ice

2     ounces rye whiskey, such as Wild Turkey or Rittenhouse

1/2   ounce green Chartreuse

1/2   ounce Punt e Mes

Twist of lemon peel, for garnish

Steps

Fill a mixing glass halfway with ice. Add the rye whiskey, green Chartreuse and Punt e Mes. Stir vigorously, then strain into chilled cocktail (martini) glass. Garnish with the twist of lemon peel.
