LEADVILLE, Colo.—Some people are still waiting to dig their vehicles out of mudslides unleashed by Colorado’s monsoon.

U.S. Forest Service Ranger Jon Morrissey says 12 vehicles were trapped Saturday by two mudslides between Leadville and Buena Vista when a six-hour rainstorm hit the area. Chaffee (CHAY’-fee) County search and rescue teams used all-terrain vehicles Monday to drive out some of the campers who were above the slides.

Some people were able to drive out four of the vehicles.

Morrissey says campers told him the mudslides sounded like a roaring river. The Forest Service plans to use an excavator and front-end loader Thursday to free the rest of the vehicles.
