GOLDEN, Colo.—The promoters of a rodeo accused of animal cruelty have canceled an event in which contestants grab the tails of steers to bring them to the ground.
Jefferson County sheriff’s spokeswoman Jacki Kelley said Friday that rodeo promoter David Martinez canceled the so-called “steer-tailing,” or coleadero, at the Mexican rodeo planned Sunday at the county fairgrounds near Golden.
The rodeo promoters agreed to have a veterinarian on site.
The American Humane Association and county animal Control planned to file an emergency injunction to stop the event.
The sheriff’s office has issued summons to the father-son team promoting the rodeo for allegedly failing to provide veterinary care to animals injured in a July 18 steer-tailing. Officials say two of the steers were euthanized.
