DENVER—Denver police say as many as 40 cats were inside the house of a 95-year-old woman who was lying in front of her house when a worried neighbor called authorities.

Police Detective John White says some of the cats were ill and appeared to be strays. Animal control officers wearing gloves and face masks responded to the house and were able to grab seven of the cats but the rest hid. Denver Animal Control officials say they will take care of the cats until further notice.

White says the officers made the discovery this week after they went inside the home to look for the woman’s 69-year-old son.

The mother and son were taken to a hospital to be evaluated.
