Aspen golfer Kristin Walla had a two-round 147 total after the completion of stroke play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in Charlotte, N.C., and qualified for match play.
Becca Huffer, a former Littleton High School star, qualified with a 150 total. Huffer and Walla are among the 64 players who will compete in match play, which begins today and concludes Sunday.
Area golfers advance.
Wyndham Clark of Greenwood Village and Cody Kent of Castle Rock earned two of the three available slots in the U.S. Amateur by shining in a qualifying tournament at Saddle Rock Golf Course in Aurora.
The third slot went to Patrick Cantlay of Los Alamitos, Calif., who tied Clark for the tournament-low score of 135. Kent shot a 138 total.
Mammoth adds forward.
The Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League signed forward Jason Jones. The undrafted free agent has played for the Coquitlam Adanacs in the Western Lacrosse Association.
Jones is tied for eighth among WLA scoring leaders this season with 62 points (24 goals and 38 assists).
Skyhawks are No. 1 in soccer poll.
Fort Lewis, the defending NCAA Division II men’s soccer champion, will begin the 2010 season ranked No. 1 nationally in a coaches poll.
The Skyhawks, who finished last season 24-1-0, were a unanimous favorite in the NSCAA poll. Lees-McRae (N.C.) — last season’s runner-up — will start the season ranked No. 2, followed by Lewis (Ill.), LeMoyne (N.Y.) and the University of Tampa.
Colorado Mines placed 18th in the poll. The Orediggers went 15-3-4 last season and made the second NCAA Tournament appearance of the program’s history.
• The Colorado Mines women’s soccer team will start the season ranked No. 7 nationally. A year ago the Orediggers had their best season, finishing 19-5-1.
The women’s team at Metro State placed 10th in the poll. The Roadrunners were 21-1-2 last season.
Conference USA salutes CC’s Brown.
Colorado College forward Tiffany Brown was named to the preseason all-Conference USA women’s soccer team.
Brown, a senior from Sterling, Va., is eighth among the Tigers’ career points leaders and is tied for seventh in career goals at CC.
Ex-Smoky Hill star joins Adams State staff.
Adams State named Janell Myers, a former Temple player and a graduate of Smoky Hill High School, the Grizzlies’ graduate assistant women’s lacrosse coach.
Myers was an all-state player at Smoky Hill and played at Temple from 2006-08. She helped the Owls win an Atlantic 10 Conference championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament. She was an assistant coach at Smoky Hill in 2009.
