Getting your player ready...

NEW YORK — The Rockies’ season began with the Milwaukee Brewers. It could end with them this weekend if Colorado isn’t careful.

With 48 games remaining, the Rockies are facing a must-win series. That it is at home fuels optimism supported by the numbers.

The Rockies are 36-19 at Coors Field, in part because they are averaging 34,749 fans per game. They will top 2 million for the season this weekend, and they rank second in baseball with a 2,973 increase per game this year.

“You can feel the energy when we step onto the field,” Carlos Gonzalez said. “I really noticed it when we came back from the last trip.

“We didn’t do well obviously, and there was nearly a sellout (on a Tuesday) against the Pirates.”

The Rockies’ contender status hinges on their continued brilliance at home. Any hiccup and they are likely done given their problems on the road (23-36).

“One of the things that was important when I took over this job was to make this our park. Too many teams were coming in here and having their way with us,” manager Jim Tracy said. “The fans have become our 10th man. That’s not just a feel-good statement. It’s the truth.”

Apology.

Triple-A infielder Omar Quintanilla, a well-respected player in the Rockies’ organization for years, released a statement Wednesday to The Denver Post, apologizing to the Rockies, teammates and fans for his 50-game suspension. He tested positive for the banned substance methylhexanamine.

“I recently purchased this product over the counter at GNC, and it was my understanding that after looking at the label, it did not contain any banned substances. I’ve always taken great pride in my nutrition, my training, my preparation and dedication to the sport that has given me so much. I realize just how fortunate I am to be playing professional baseball and would never intentionally do anything to jeopardize that.”

Footnotes.

The Rockies have until Monday to sign first- round pick Kyle Parker. Slight skepticism over a deal has begun to sprout in recent days. Parker is the starting quarterback for Clemson’s football team. . . . Tracy on Todd Helton, who is hitting .304 since returning from the DL: “He has a livelier body and better bat speed.” . . . Aaron Cook (toe) will throw at least two more bullpen sessions before beginning a rehab assignment.
