ARLINGTON, Texas — The Rangers placed slumping second baseman Cristian Guzman on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right quadriceps.

Guzman was in the Rangers’ original lineup for Saturday night’s game against the Red Sox, but he was replaced by Andres Blanco after Guzman informed manager Ron Washington of the injury.

The Rangers recalled right-hander Pedro Strop from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take Guzman’s roster spot, Strop’s fourth stint with Texas this season.

Romero signs extension.

The Blue Jays signed left-hander Ricky Romero to a five-year, $30.1 million contract extension.

“I’m really, really happy it’s done, and that it’s over with,” Romero said.

This season, the 25-year-old is 9-7 with a 3.53 ERA in 23 starts.

Ellsbury on DL.

Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury was placed on the 15-day DL for the third time this season with more pain in his left side.

Ellsbury collided with Texas pitcher Tommy Hunter at first base after he led off Friday’s game with a roller down the line. Ellsbury underwent MRI and CT scans and has bruised ribs.

Pettitte has soreness.

Pitcher Andy Pettitte rejoined the Yankees to meet with trainers after experiencing soreness in his strained groin in a simulated game Friday.
