OXNARD, Calif. — Rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant is on track to play in Dallas’ final two preseason games, team owner Jerry Jones said Saturday before the Cowboys’ first work- out in California.

Bryant sprained his right ankle during a July 30 practice. He was expected to miss four to six weeks, which could have wiped out his chances of playing in the preseason.

But Jones said Bryant’s recovery is coming along well and that he is “hopeful we will have him back for those last two preseason games.”

The first-round draft pick from Oklahoma State could be in action Aug. 28 at Houston or Sept. 2 at home against Miami.

A few Giants sidelined.

Pro Bowler players Chris Snee and Steve Smith and at least five teammates will miss the Giants’ preseason opener Monday against the Jets at the Meadowlands.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin said tight end Kevin Boss, linebacker Keith Bulluck, safeties Kenny Phillips and Michael Johnson and wide receiver Tim Brown also won’t play against the Jets.

Carolina signs LB.

The Panthers signed linebacker Nic Harris, hoping to add depth to the position.

Bills back to have tests.

Buffalo running back Fred Jackson will have more tests to determine the severity of a hand injury that will force the starter to miss the rest of the Bills’ preseason.

Footnotes.

The Ravens cut veteran long snapper Matt Katula.

• Ravens offensive tackle Jared Gaither has a back injury that will sideline him for two weeks.

• Injured running back Lynell Hamilton was released by the Saints.
