Ian Stewart has had his ups and downs at the plate, but he has emerged as one of the game’s best defensive third basemen. He showed it again in the seventh inning when he dug a throw out of the dirt from relay man Troy Tulowitzki and tagged out Rickie Weeks to deprive Weeks of a leadoff triple. Ryan Braun singled moments later for what could have been the go-ahead run.
Looking for a spark.
Manager Jim Tracy has been adamant about using Dexter Fowler at the top of the lineup through good times and bad. But with Eric Young Jr. on a hot streak at Colorado Springs — .333 with a .415 on-base percentage over 10 games — Tracy decided to use E.Y. Jr. in the leadoff spot. Fowler hit eighth for the first time this season.
Double down.
Never fails. The Rockies collected six doubles in the series opener but didn’t have any Saturday night.
