Fort Collins-based VanDyne SuperTurbo Inc. won a preliminary contract with Cummins Inc. of Columbus, Ind., to develop efficiency-enhancing parts for large highway trucks. The value of the contract was not disclosed.

VanDyne’s “super-turbocharger” prototypes capture trucks’ exhaust heat and return it to the engine, improving efficiency 5 to 7 percent, said company founder and chief executive Ed VanDyne. Cummins agreed to test the units in two stages before they might be available for full production. The process usually takes four to five years, VanDyne said.

The privately held startup employs 16 people full time, a number VanDyne said he plans to double within a year.
