SALIDA, Colo.—Authorities are slowing the flow of the Arkansas River as they try to recover the body of a missing rafting guide.

Twenty-three-year-old Kimberly Appelson of Breckenridge was thrown from a boat near a rapid at the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area on July 11. Dogs later picked up her scent but the water was too high to look for her there.

Six people have died in the area since 1990.

The state parks department is warning rafters that Wednesday’s recovery mission will affect water flows on the upper part of the river, above Salida, and to check conditions before putting boats in. The Browns Canyon area could be affected by early afternoon.

Users in the lower river corridor below Salida may also see lower flows on Thursday.
