FORT CARSON, Colo.—About 3,800 soldiers from Fort Carson are staying behind in Iraq in a training role, even though the last U.S. combat troops have pulled out.

The 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 4th Infantry Division is assigned to help train Iraqi security forces. The soldiers deployed to southern Iraq in March.

The last American combat units pulled out of Iraq on Thursday, more than seven years after the U.S.-led invasion.

Two other Fort Carson units are in Afghanistan: 3,800 in the 1st Brigade Combat Team and 500 in the 43rd Sustainment Brigade.

The 4th Infantry Division has a total of four Brigades and its headquarters are at Fort Carson.
