A particular kind of backyard homesteading is taking flight, even if its inhabitants can’t fly themselves.

An inaugural Chicken Coop Tour is being planned for Oct. 2, and the Denver Botanic Gardens and Denver Urban Homesteading are looking for residents who own chickens and other urban livestock and would like to exhibit their backyard farm animals and housing for the tour.

“Other cities have these tours,” said James Bertini, co-owner of Denver Urban Homesteading.

“It’s a way to see chicken coops and gardens, which promote sustainable living. Owners will answer questions, and people can see different kinds of architectural styles of chicken coops.”

Applicants must live in Denver, Englewood, Lakewood, Wheat Ridge or Arvada. For an app lication, e-mail leonl@botanicgardens.org or james@denverurbanhomesteading.com. Applications are due Friday. For more information, call 720-865-3539.

The cost of the self-guided Chicken Coop Tour, planned for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., is $20. Each ticket allows a family or four individuals to participate.
