It isn’t the biggest or longest-running whitewater raft and kayak race in Colorado, but for many die-hard paddlers, Saturday’s Timberline Gore Canyon Race is the only one that matters. Sure, FIBArk’s downriver race has been around for half a century, and creek racing at the Teva Mountain Games might grab more headlines. But when it comes to classic big-water raft and kayak racing, the raw and rowdy Gore Canyon offers a venue like nowhere else — especially so late in the season. Spectator access is always a little tricky for anyone who isn’t comfortable in a Class V environment, but a footpath from the Pumphouse Recreation Area leads hikers to the action about an hour upstream. Others have been known to hitch a ride in and out on rafts. Otherwise, there’s the paddle and portage option, or simply show up for the campfire slide show après-race with free tunes provided by Harvey and the Wallbangers. Race registration remains open until 11 a.m. Saturday, with racing getting underway at noon. Stand-up paddle (SUP) demos will be offered at the Pumphouse campsite at 5 p.m. Friday.
