LAS VEGAS — A 22-year-old from Mexico on Monday won the Miss Universe pageant after donning a flowing red gown and telling an audience that it is important to teach kids family values.
Jimena Navarrete was the first to answer an interview question and the last of 83 contestants standing in the headline-grabbing pageant on the Las Vegas Strip.
Navarrete was asked whether children should use the Internet unsupervised, and she said the Internet is an indispensable tool of our time.
Rock performer Bret Michaels and NBC correspondent Natalie Morales hosted the pageant. The contest, co-owned by Donald Trump and NBC, was judged by celebrities, including 2010 Olympic gold medalist Evan Lysacek and actress Jane Seymour.
First and second runners-up were Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillipps and Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell, respectively. The Associated Press
