CHICAGO — The White Sox gave “The Big Hurt” a big honor Sunday, retiring Frank Thomas’ No. 35 before the team’s game against the Yankees.
Thomas fought back tears during an emotional ceremony that included fireworks and several of his former teammates. He thanked the White Sox and the city, saying “you can only dream of something like this” as his voice cracked.
Among those on hand to see Thomas become the ninth White Sox player to have his number retired were Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk and former World Series MVP Jermaine Dye. Both played with him.
Feller has leukemia
CLEVELAND — Bob Feller, the third-oldest living member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, is being treated for leukemia.
The 91-year-old Feller was back at his usual seat in the Indians’ press box Sunday after missing the first five games of the current homestand.
The former Indians star said he felt good after receiving 10 days of outpatient treatment at the Cleveland Clinic.
Morrow’s season almost over
TORONTO — Blue Jays right-hander Brandon Morrow will be shut down for the season following his next start.
Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said there is nothing physically wrong with Morrow, who beat Detroit on Saturday to win his career-high fifth consecutive decision.
