First a new name, now a new star. Team Garmin-Cervelo, the Boulder-based cycling team that changed from Garmin-Transitions last week, signed Thor Hushovd on Monday.

Hushovd, 32, competed for the Swiss-based Cervelo Test Team in 2009. While competing for French team Credit Agricole from 2000-08, Hushovd won the Tour de France points title in 2005 and the same title in the Vuelta de España in 2006. He is a nine-time Tour de France stage winner.

“Cervelo has been a great supporter for the past two years, and its partnership with Garmin feels like a good fit,” Hushovd said in a statement. “I chose Garmin-Cervelo because I have a lot of respect for what (CEO) Jonathan Vaughters has done for cycling, because I think we’ll have a very strong, competitive team and because I’ll be able to continue to work with Cervelo.

“My biggest goal is to get one major classics victory in 2011,” Hushovd said. “I’ve come close over the past few years, so I will build on that experience and hopefully, stand on the podium with my new team.”

Hushovd, a native Norwegian, will join Christian Vande Velde among the lead GC riders.

“One of our goals is to become stronger in the classics, and adding a world-class rider like Thor will get us there,” Vaughters said. “He’s an exceptionally talented rider and a great fit for our team.”

Rohnert signs with Tartu Rock.

Former University of Denver men’s basketball player Nate Rohnert of Parker signed a professional contract to play for Tartu Rock in Estonia.

“It’s an incredible opportunity for Nate to start his career,” DU coach Joe Scott said. “Obviously, at the professional level, it all comes down to your production and professionalism, but I know Nate has prepared himself well for the challenge that lies ahead.”

Rohnert, formerly an all-state pick for Chaparral High School, was DU’s all-time leader in games played (120), ninth in scoring with 1,307 points, fourth in free throws made (379) and free-throw attempts (528), sixth in assists (357) and seventh in steals (124).

Denverite misses course record by one.

Tom Krystyn of Denver came within a stroke of the course record in shooting a 7-under-par 63 to earn medalist honors at the U.S. Mid-Amateur sectional qualifying at Flatirons Golf Course in Boulder.

With 1986 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Bill Loeffler caddying, Krystyn, 46, played a bogey-free round for a four-stroke victory. The only tournament round lower at Flatirons was a 62 by Matt Call in 2005.

Krystyn, who hit all 18 greens in regulation, was one of five qualifiers for the U.S. Mid-Amateur, which is limited to players 25 and older. Also advancing from the field of 73 were Jim Doidge of Pueblo (67), former professional Keith Humerickhouse of New Castle (68), and David Stewart and Jason Coffin, both of Denver (69s). The U.S. Mid-Amateur will be Sept. 25-30 at Atlantic Golf Club in Bridgehampton, N.Y.

Stewart, who moved to Denver from New York this month, and Coffin earned their berths in a five-man playoff for the final two spots.
