FORT COLLINS — The battle for Colorado State’s starting center is resolved. Junior Tyler McDermott will start Saturday against Colorado, backed up by redshirt freshman Weston Richburg, who is slated to start at guard.CSU’s preseason two-deep was announced Monday afternoon.
“Richburg is a very talented redshirt freshman,” said CSU coach Steve Fairchild. “Asking him to be a full-time center probably isn’t the right thing at this point.”
Another position with good competition throughout fall camp was defensive end, where Fairchild has tabbed sophomores Davis Burl, a converted linebacker, and Broderick Sargent to start.
Freshman quarterback Pete Thomas will make his first collegiate appearance.
As for a comment by CU coach Dan Hawkins on the Big 12 teleconference Monday that CU wouldn’t necessarily try to fluster a quarterback in his first college game, Fairchild just laughed.
“You always want to pressure a young quarterback,” he said.
