SAMMAMISH, Wash.—For the second straight year Skyline, about 15 miles east of Seattle, is producing one of the top high school recruits in the country.
Last year it was quarterback Jake Heaps, who eventually signed with Brigham Young and is contending for the starting job as a true freshman. But Heaps’ favorite target was Kasen Williams.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound wideout is widely regarded as one of the top senior receivers in the country. As a junior, Williams caught 74 passes for 1,203 yards and 20 touchdowns. That followed up a sophomore season in which Williams had 56 catches for just under 1,000 yards.
He had a long scoring catch of 91 yards last season.
“He’s as gifted as you’ll ever see from a kid catching a ball at his age,” Skyline coach Mat Taylor told The Seattle Times after Williams’ sophomore season. “I’ve had coaches tell me he’s the best receiver they’ve ever seen in this state. Some colleges will say, ‘He would start for us right now.’ ”
Williams is the son of former Washington wide receiver Aaron Williams and decided just recently to follow in his dad’s footsteps, choosing the Huskies over California, Florida, LSU and Notre Dame.
At a news conference to announce his decision, Williams teased onlookers, briefly passing over a Washington hat. Then he asked his dad for some help.
Aaron Williams stepped forward and took off his jacked to reveal his old No. 2 Washington jersey—effectively proclaiming his son’s choice.
“I want people to look back and say Kasen was as good as his dad, if not better,” the younger Williams said.
