DENVER—A driver is dead after his tractor-trailer hit a buffalo and rolled over in eastern Colorado.

Colorado state trooper Nate Reid says the crash occurred 3:35 a.m. Thursday on Colorado 36 just north of Byers in eastern Arapahoe County.

He says 74-year-old Maynard Bontrager was hauling salt when his truck hit a buffalo that had wandered onto the highway. The truck then ran off the road and rolled.

The driver was not using a seat belt.

The buffalo did not survive.

Investigators are looking into where the buffalo came from.
