LONGMONT, Colo.—Longmont Mayor Bryan Baum will take a one-month medical leave from office to be treated for kidney cancer.
Baum said Thursday that he is scheduled for surgery next week to have the kidney and a tumor removed. The Longmont Times-Call reports that Mayor Pro Tem Gabe Santos will take over while Baum is out.
Baum says he went to the doctor after not feeling well in July. He says the doctor gave him the news about the cancer Tuesday, about two hours before the City Council meeting.
Baum’s surgery is scheduled next Tuesday at Longmont United Hospital. He is expected to remain in the hospital for at least a week afterward.
Baum says there’s no sign the cancer has spread beyond the kidney.
