The campaign treasurer for embattled Colorado gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes has resigned three weeks into the job. Maes spokesman Nate Strauch said Bob Balink resigned because of a long commute from El Paso County, not because of disagreements with the campaign.

The treasurer started work for the Republican candidate in mid-August. Maes has struggled to keep his books straight since starting his campaign last year. Last month, Maes paid a $17,500 fine for campaign-finance violations. The Associated Press
