COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A Colorado charter school is handing out iPads to some of its students this year.

The Gazette of Colorado Springs reports that about 50 students at Pikes Peak Prep will get the tablet computers to use in their four core classes—math, science, language arts and social studies.

Students will be able to send screen shots of their work to teachers instead of turning in assignments on paper. The iPads also allow students to perform virtual frog dissections.

The computers retail for about $500 each. Principal Patricia Arnold says the school’s management company and its board think iPads probably cost less than replacing outdated textbooks year after year.

Students won’t be allowed to take the iPads home.
