Colorado State University issued a safety alert to students early this morning after a visitor to the campus reported that he had been shot outside of CSU’s Summit Hall.

Authorities advised students to use extra caution while on campus until the suspect could be located and to report any suspicious activity they might have observed.

“We are absolutely taking this seriously,” said Dell Rae Moellenberg, public information officer for the CSU police department.

She said that the CSU police department is performing extra patrols on campus today.

According to the bulletin, posted on the university’s “safety alert” website, the victim received a wound to the arm after the suspect approached him and asked for drugs.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight and was reported to Broomfield police several hours later after the victim drove from the campus to Broomfield.

Moellenberg said the 21-year-old victim lives in Broomfield. Moellenberg said the victim didn’t seek medical treatment for his injuries.

Sgt. Heidi Walts, spokeswoman for the Broomfield Police Department, confirmed that there is an “active investigation” going on regarding the shooting.

However, Walts said CSU police are taking the lead in the investigation and referred inquiries to CSU.

The shooter was described as a black man, 5 feet 7 inches tall, wearing a light blue flannel shirt with multiple-colored stripes and a hat with a red brim. The victim described his assailant as being “younger than 21.”

The suspect was last seen running north toward James Court from Summit Hall.

CSU authorities said that offices are open and classes will proceed normally today.
