Alex Gunberg added a goal and an assist for the Orediggers (6-0, 3-0), ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II.

Fort Lewis women top Mesa State.

Elena Benevides and Emma Cannis both scored their first goals of the season to lead the Fort Lewis women’s soccer team to a 2-0 win over Mesa State in Grand Junction.

The Skyhawks, ranked No. 12 in Division II, improved to 6-1 overall, 2-1 in the RMAC. The Mavericks fell to 2-4-1, 0-3.

• Fort Lewis might move up in the rankings because No. 3 Metro State lost 3-2 in double overtime, to No. 18 Regis at Auraria Field.

The Rangers’ (5-3, 2-1 RMAC) Rachel McMahon was wide open in front of the Roadrunners’ (5-1-1, 1-1-1) net with four minutes left in the second extra session and scored the winner. That stopped a 20-game Metro State winning streak against Regis. The previous time the Rangers topped Metro was in October 2001.

• Junior Jessica Hellweg scored off a defensive giveaway in the 72nd minute, her fifth goal of the season, and Adams State goalkeeper Hannah Kolts stopped all six shots in the Grizzlies’ (3-4, 2-1 RMAC) 1-0 win over New Mexico Highlands (3-3-1, 1-1-1) in Alamosa.

Handicapped golf advocate Jones dies at 63.

Members of Colorado’s golf community Wednesday remembered Greg Jones for his avid interest in bringing the sport to handicapped participants.

Jones, 63, who was handicapped by polio, died Sept. 17 in Wheat Ridge. He co-founded the Association for Disabled American Golfers and spent much of his time working to ensure the sport was accessible to everyone.

“He organized an annual tournament here in Denver for able-bodied golfers to play alongside disabled golfers,” said Warren Simmons, former executive director of the Colorado Golf Association.

Ed Mate, the current director of the CGA, said Jones was prominent in golf circles in the area in the 1990s.

“He always was so upbeat,” Mate said. “Everyone admired him because of all the challenges he had. He was an inspiration to be around.” The CGA presented Jones a distinguished service award in 2003.

Services are scheduled at 3 p.m., Oct. 2, at Christ Episcopal Church, 2950 S. University Blvd., Denver. The family is suggesting in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the National Alliance for Accessible Golf, 1733 King St., Alexandria, Va. 22314. Irv Moss, The Denver Post
