DENVER—A Children’s hospital doctor indicted on 655 counts of prescription fraud appeared in court to be advised of his charges and the punishment he faces if convicted.

Dr. Louis C. Hampers made his first appearance Thursday in federal court after his arrest in Virginia earlier this month. A federal grand jury indictment alleges Hampers obtained thousands of pain and sleeping pills using fake names.

Hampers is scheduled in court again Sept. 28 for a detention hearing and arraignment.

Hampers worked as a specialist in pediatric emergency medicine at Children’s and was a faculty member at the University of Colorado.
