ANCHORAGE, Alaska—A Colorado man who employed unlawful workers and paid them under the table has been sentenced to federal prison.

Thirty-seven-year-old Esteban Lane Stubbs of Kremmling, Colo., was ordered Thursday to spend one year in prison and forfeit more than $336,000 for structuring his currency withdrawals so that the Internal Revenue Service would not be notified. Notification is required of currency transactions of $10,000 or more.

Court documents say that Stubbs’ company, Stubbs Enterprises, operated in the greater Anchorage area. He employed people to install drywall who were not lawfully permitted to work in the United States. Prosecutors say he paid them sub-par wages in cash and failed to withhold and pay employment taxes and benefits.
