LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska’s defense has earned its Blackshirts. Coach Bo Pelini said he handed out 12 black practice jerseys Thursday to recognize key players on his defense. The black jerseys are a Nebraska tradition that has come to symbolize defensive excellence.

Previously, Pelini waited until October or even November to hand out the black jerseys because he believes it’s an honor players have to earn.

“Just thought it was the right time,” Pelini told the Lincoln Journal-Star after Thursday’s practice.

The recipients of the coveted black practice jerseys were defensive linemen Pierre Allen (a Thomas Jefferson High grad), Jared Crick, Baker Steinkuhler and Cameron Meredith, linebackers Eric Martin and Lavonte David, hybrid Eric Hagg and secondary members Prince Amukamara, Alfonzo Dennard, DeJon Gomes, Rickey Thenarse and P.J. Smith.

The No. 6 Huskers have allowed an average of 16 points this year and rank 24th nationally in scoring defense. The Blackshirts have grabbed eight interceptions.
