DENVER—Colorado colleges are bracing for lower state funding next year and some are drafting alternative plans to raise tuition by more than 9 percent.

Rico Munn, director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education, said Wednesday colleges may have their state funding cut from $705 million this year to $555 million or less next year.

Munn said state colleges and universities that want to raise tuition above the mandatory cap of 9 percent must submit alternative plans by Oct. 1. The applications must then be approved by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education.
