Momo Thomas, Colorado State’s junior starting cornerback, will miss the rest of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery, CSU coach Steve Fairchild announced Wednesday.
Thomas had been heavily taped after games and practices all season. He played as a true freshman and has a redshirt year available. Fairchild said the school will try to get him a medical hardship year.
He had 13 tackles in four games and had the Rams’ lone interception of the year, despite nursing the shoulder.
His replacement is true freshman Shaq Bell, who has played extensively in relief of Thomas.
Also, safety Elijah-Blu Smith (hamstring) and offensive tackle Mark Starr (concussion) watched practice from the sideline.
Fairchild said sophomore Joe Caprioglio, who made his first career start at guard last week, will start in Starr’s place at tackle.
The Rams open Mountain West play Saturday against fifth-ranked Texas Christian. CSU athletic director Paul Kowalczyk said at practice a crowd of at least 25,000 is expected.
