Raiders quarterback Luke Longfield, left, injured on the season’s first play from scrimmage, returned last week and was productive — 12-of-16 for 181 yards and two touchdowns — in a 48-14 crushing of Fruita Monument.

You know these two programs from the old Jefferson County League. Now in the Big 6, it’s the league opener for both. . . . A-West was idle last week. . . . The Wildcats’ Taylor Connors had a 408-yard passing performance (16-of-20, four touchdowns) against Cherry Creek in Week 3; Isaac Fairbairn, left, ran for two touchdowns and added a scoring reception. . . . Call it a character-building victory over Valor Christian the past week for Pomona, the 2009 state runner-up, especially after being whipped 42-7 by Regis Jesuit.
Denver South (3-1) vs. Denver East (3-1)

This will be the Rebels’ fifth of seven consecutive games at All-City. . . . South fell 26-22 to Golden in Week 1, then was explosive the next three weeks, including a 20-0 fourth quarter last week in taming Thomas Jefferson 27-18. . . . Tyler Jump, left, has thrown for seven touchdowns, five to A.J. Battle. . . . The Angels lost 35-28 to Cherry Creek but routed Eaglecrest, George Washington and Montbello by a combined 132-26. . . . East’s Kadeem Hendrix has thrown for five touchdowns, and Isaiah Hendrix has rushed for seven.

Ask Dakota Ridge about close. Before taking down Green Mountain 40-14 a week ago, the Eagles beat Pueblo West 23-20 and Rock Canyon 21-20, then lost 3-0 to Ponderosa. . . . Bolton Howes, left, has thrown for seven touchdowns and leads the Eagles in rushing with 306 yards. . . . Brent Terrell has rushed for 10 touchdowns. . . . Class 4A preseason No. 1 Monarch got thumped by Broomfield in its opener but has looked strong in its last three outings.

The Spartans snapped a two-game skid (to Monarch and Pueblo West) last week in a 17-13 home victory over Niwot. . . . Broomfield lost a tight 23-21 decision to 5A Legacy in Week 2, had a bye in Week 3, then punished longtime rival Loveland 46-27 as Aric Kaiser, left, ran for three touchdowns. . . . Dan Guebelle rolled to 252 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. . . . The Eagles will get a break from the Northern next week when they host 5A Denver East.
Rock Canyon (1-3) at Pueblo West (3-1)

Consider Rock Canyon familiar with hard luck — the Jaguars are 1-3 yet have outscored their foes 117-109. They beat Golden 35-21 and have losses of 43-42 to Montrose, 21-20 to Dakota Ridge and 24-20 to Falcon. . . . Matt Hopper, left, has thrown for nine touchdowns and Eric Williams has 480 yards on the ground with six touchdowns. . . . Pueblo West has back-to-back one-TD victories, notably last week against Montrose (4-1). . . . The Cyclones ran for 284 yards, with sophomore Derek Jackson scoring twice.
Montrose (4-1) vs. Ponderosa (2-2)

Montrose’s Indians were worn down last week in a 21-14 setback to Pueblo West and its pounding rushing attack. Otherwise, they’ve been consistent and tough as usual, including a hard-fought 6-0 triumph at Glenwood Springs. . . . Bryce Gaber, left, has rushed for 379 yards and six touchdowns. . . . Ponderosa, before heading into the new South Metro, is fresh from a 21-6 setback to district rival Highlands Ranch. The Mustangs have scored seven points or fewer in three of their four outings.

It’s always the social rivalry event of the year, the Bell Game, believed to be the oldest high school rivalry west of the Mississippi River. Dutch Clark Stadium will rock with fans probably numbering into five digits. Series numbers: Central leads 55-45-9 overall, 34-24-3 since playing for the Bell. . . . Centennial’s John Vela, left, has exploded for 887 yards rushing, 369 in a loss to Lewis-Palmer, and 11 touchdowns. . . . Keanu Valdez paces the Central Wildcats, who have been outscored by a combined 124-28, with 450 yards rushing.

Here’s another one of those old-fashioned, longtime northeastern Colorado rivalries. . . . The Wray Eagles’ Brett Vlasin, left, has thrown for 12 touchdowns, four each to Jarret Cure and Ben Jones. . . . Wray, which has taken over the No. 1 ranking, has outscored two out-of-state foes by a combined 78-34. . . . Akron has lost consecutive games for just the third time since 1998. . . . The last time the Rams dropped three in a row? 1997. . . . Jourdan Hottinger remains the Rams’ rushing story with 715 yards and nine touchdowns.
