GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The widow of a Grand Junction police officer who killed himself after being accused of sexually assaulting a woman is suing authorities.
Michelle Coyne filed a federal lawsuit Monday alleging that investigators had doubts about the case against her husband but moved ahead with it anyway. The Daily Sentinel says she alleges that the police and sheriff’s departments are responsible for her husband’s death.
Glenn Coyne was arrested and fired on Oct. 1, 2009 and shot himself five days later.
In the suit, Michelle Coyne claims that the alleged victim and her husband had consensual sex and that a friend of the woman reported a sexual assault later in the day.
Police chief John Camper and Sheriff Stan Hilkey declined to comment.
