DENVER—Denver and Adams County officials are unveiling plans to redevelop a north-Denver site once home to a smelter and designated as a Superfund site.
Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and Adams County commissioners are announcing the project Thursday in the Globeville neighborhood.
A Denver-based partnership will manage cleanup and redevelopment of the 77-acre property for a trust established after the former smelter owner, mining company Asarco, filed for bankruptcy. A new Globeville Commerce Center will open with about 1 million square feet of space when the cleanup is completed.
The smelter plant operated from the late 1880s until the early 1990s. The area was declared a Superfund site in 1999.
Asarco cleaned up hundreds of properties by removing and replacing soil contaminated by arsenic and lead.
