The driver of a pickup was arrested Wednesday in Colorado Springs after an officer found a shoe box stuffed with counterfeit $20 bills in his truck, police said.

The incident unfolded about 11:45 p.m. when officer Michael Palmer spotted a Toyota truck parked behind a barricade near West Fillmore Street and Centennial Boulevard, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department crime blotter.

Palmer approached the vehicle to “check on the welfare” of the driver. As Palmer talked to the driver, the officer spotted “an open shoe box on the passenger seat that appeared to contain a large amount” of cash, police said.

When asked about the money the driver replied: “It’s not real.” Police said the box contained 41 “counterfeit” $20 bills.

The U.S. Secret Service was called to check out the alleged phony dough; the driver of the truck, 46-year-old Mike Honneywell, was arrested.

Honneywell is being held on suspicion of criminal possession of a forged instrument and forgery for the manufacture of the counterfeit currency, police said.
