Boulder’s Taylor Phinney became the first-ever American to win a medal in the under-23 road race at the UCI Road World Championships on Friday in Geelong, Australia. Phinney tied for the bronze with Canadian Guillaume Boivin.
“I really wasn’t expecting to do that well (Friday),” Phinney said. “It is a hard course and I’m a big person. It takes a little extra to get over those climbs, but I had a lot of support from the team and a lot of motivation today to finish the season off on a really high note. I couldn’t have asked for a better week really with the time trial win and the third-place finish here.”
Phinney became the first under-23 rider since the Netherland’s Thomas Dekker in 2004 to win a medal in both the time trial and the road race.
Mines soccer wins in Durango
The Colorado Mines men’s soccer team did something that no team had done in nearly three years — beat Fort Lewis in Durango. The Orediggers (8-0-1, 6-0-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference), ranked No. 1 in Division II, beat the Skyhawks (5-4, 4-1) 4-2 at Dirks Field.
Tesho Akindele and Chike Sullivan each scored twice for Mines. Fort Lewis had not lost at home since Oct. 14, 2007, and had either tied or won 36 consecutive RMAC matches.
