PUEBLO — CSU-Pueblo’s defense stonewalled Chadron State at the 1-yard line on three consecutive plays in triple overtime to earn a wild, 33-30 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday.
The ThunderWolves’ Kyle Major booted a 34-yard field goal to clinch the game for CSU-Pueblo.
CSU-Pueblo stayed perfect, improving to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the RMAC. Chadron State fell to 3-2 and 2-1.
The teams traded field goals in the first overtime and then swapped touchdowns in the second before Major kicked his fourth field goal of the game.
The Eagles dominated time of possession, finishing with nearly 50 minutes compared to 25 for Pueblo. Chadron State also outgained the ThunderWolves 405-329.
Nebraska-Kearney 27, Adams St. 17
KEARNEY, Neb. — Senior Brendan Liess ran for a career-high 98 yards and 17th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney blocked a punt for a score en route to a victory over Adams State.
The Lopers improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the RMAC. They beat the Grizzlies (1-4, 0-3 RMAC) for the sixth straight time.
The game was a defensive battle for the first three quarters, but the teams combined for 34 points and 319 yards in the final 15 minutes.
Western New Mexico 20, Mesa St. 10
SILVER CITY, N.M. — Mesa State committed costly turnovers and Western New Mexico took advantage to score an RMAC win.
The Mustangs were 3-for-3 in the red zone and improved to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the RMAC.
Mesa State (1-3, 1-2) had four fumbles, losing three, and one interception. WNMU limited the Mavericks to 173 yards of offense.
Mesa’s Michael Mankoff threw for 116 yards, and Will Halboth rushed 15 times for 57 yards.
The Mavericks held an early 10-0 lead on a Caleb Pavy field goal and a 1-yard touchdown run by Kris Means.
N.M. Highlands 32, Western St. 31
LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The Cowboys defeated Western State in dramatic fashion, pulling off a last-second drive to earn their first victory of the season.
Cowboys quarterback Jordan Mendoza and DiAmaal Holmes hooked up on a 24-yard touchdown play as time expired, tying the game at 31-31. Kicker Ernesto Guerra — shaky up to this point in the season — kicked the extra point to seal the win for the Cowboys (1-4, 1-2).
Colorado Mines 38, Fort Lewis 28
DURANGO — Clay Garcia threw three touchdown passes and finished with 242 total yards, leading the Orediggers over Fort Lewis.
Tim Jenkins led the way for the Skyhawks, throwing for 386 yards and four touchdowns.
