Let it be known that I am a dedicated mouse person. When we adopted a cat some years ago, we named him Mouse. But that’s another story.
This tale is about a new device that should allay the fears of mouse-ophiles that the venerable pointing gadget is on life support.
The rather exotic offering is from Gyration: its $80 Air Mouse Elite takes a cue from the Nintendo Wii and Sony’s PlayStation Move controllers. You hold the mouse up — no wires — and direct the cursor by moving your wrist. Built-in motion sensors do the trick. Either hand works it, and you can leave the tabletop at home.
The Air Mouse will work with PC games — the new version talks to Mac computers as well — and comes with software for using it in presentations or classrooms. The range from the wireless dongle that attaches to the computer and the mouse is a robust 100 feet, which beats most iPhone substitutes, like the Mobile Air Mouse app.
