AURORA, Colo.—A $653 million water-treatment project that draws water downstream from Denver’s wastewater treatment is expected to boost Aurora’s water supply by 20 percent.
The Peter D. Binney Water Purification Facility will be able to provide up to 3.3 billion gallons of water annually.
The facility is part of the Prairie Waters project, a water purification and recycling system that draws water near Brighton and sends it 34 miles to the facility near the Aurora Reservoir.
Former Aurora Water Director Peter Binney conceived of the project during the peak drought years of 2002-03, when the suburb east of Denver was down to about a quarter of its water supply.
Binney attended an opening ceremony at the plant Friday.
