WASHINGTON — The top candidates for Illinois’ open U.S. Senate seat debated character issues Sunday on national television, with Democrat Alexi Giannoulias insisting that he knew little about convicted felons who got loans from his family bank and Republican Mark Kirk acknowledging that he is accountable for embellishing his military record.
Credibility has been a constant theme for both men vying for the seat formerly held by President Barack Obama. The contest has national symbolism in the struggle for control of Congress and as a referendum on Obama.
