Workers at a Denver plant that manufactures ice were evacuated during the lunch hour today because of an ammonia leak.

No one has been injured in the incident.

Several workers with Reddy Ice, and workers in at least one nearby business, were evacuated as a precautionary measure after ammonia leaked from a pipe in the plant, said Lt. Phil Champagne, a Denver Fire Department spokesman.

The fire department was called to the plant, at 2101 31st St., about noon.

Firefighters donned hazardous material suits to safely enter the building, Champagne said. They plan to shut down a value to cut off the ammonia flow.

Reddy Ice, a national company with plants in 31 states, according to its website, is the largest manufacturer and distributor of packaged ice products in the United States.

It’s unclear how many workers have been evacuated and how long it may be before they’re able to go back to work.
